Walking in Two Worlds Study Group for K-12 Teachers in April, 2014

This study group for Richmond teachers K-12, entitled Transforming Curriculum by Embedding Indigenous Perspectives and Content: Walking in Two Worlds, will meet to talk about “embed[ding] [Indigenous] perspectives into all parts of the curriculum in a meaningful and authentic manner”, thereby honouring its place as the historical and contemporary foundation of BC and Canada.   We would like to talk openly about how best to “walk in two worlds”, as non-Indigenous people being asked to concurrently learn and become teachers of Indigenous perspectives and knowledge.

 Some topics we may address:

Colonialism and the intergenerational impacts of Indian Residential Schools

Ways to integrate Indigenous content and perspectives

Issues around cultural appropriation

Cultural respect and protocol

Resources (reference material, websites, novels, videos, etc.)

Practical strategies, and lessons for the classroom

This group, facilitated by Andrea Davidson, and Leanne McColl, will meet for 3 sessions in April, at the District Resource Centre (Rideau Park Elementary) from 3:30 pm to 5 pm.  Wednesday, April 9, Wednesday, April 23, and Wednesday, May 7.
