UBC Faculty of Education Community Book Club Event

Join the UBC Community Book Club in reading, The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie. This novel is “heartbreaking, funny and beautifully written”. It chronicles the contemporary adolescent experience of one young Native American boy who is living and learning in worlds that are far apart yet so connected. Sherman Alexie challenges readers to (re)define their understandings of Aboriginal/Native American realities.

This book club event focuses a prominent theme within the novel. This event will begin with a guest speaker followed by a discussion of the book. This event takes place at a local area high school.

Engage: Teaching the history and legacy of Indian Residential Schools

The First Nations House of Learning, the Indian Residential School Survivors Society, the Morris and Helen Belkin Gallery and Museum of Anthropology are working in collaboration to host a teacher’s professional development day at UBC on October 25.
The Pro-D day will provide an opportunity for teachers to engage, reflect, and develop the tools, strategies and resources they may need to teach the history of residential schools in Canada and to move towards reconciliation.

The Year of Truth and Reconciliation for Vancouver

September was an exciting month with the week-long Truth and Reconciliation Event held at the PNE grounds, and all the workshops and panels that both led up to, and followed the event.  Richmond sent a busload of students to Education Day, which offered students a chance to engage with the topic of Residential Schools.  Two of our own students from McRoberts were invited to sit on a student panel to discuss the intergenerational effects of Residential Schools.  Minister of Education, Peter Fassbender was so impressed with our students' heartfelt remarks that he extended personal invitations for them to visit him in Victoria, and even gave Nathan MacDonald a necktie as a remembrance of the day.
